Saint Petersburg was founded by Peter the Great in 1703 as the new capital of Russia. The city was built at the mouth of the Neva River on marshy ground, where the foundation stone of the Peter and Paul Fortress was laid. It became the capital in 1712, a function it held until 1918, with the exception of a brief period from 1728 to 1730. After the October Revolution of 1917, the capital was moved to Moscow, and in 1924 the city was renamed Leningrad. In 1991, the city regained its historical name.
